If you think about it, police officers are usually the first responders to any kind of emergency situation. At times, that can be a dangerous charge. It's important to support this group who keeps us safe and handles so many different situations. That's why we're excited about the opening of the new Public Safety Building this weekend.

This state-of-the-art facility, located at 475 S. 300 East in Salt Lake City, is one of the first buildings in the state to generate as much energy as it uses, in an innovative design we've never seen. The architects toured dozens of buildings across the U.S. when developing the design. It has large solar panels, similar to what you see at the Salt Palace Convention Center.

The building will house, police, fire, Salt Lake City 911, dispatch and new Emergency Operations Center. This is the first time in the city's history police and fire have been housed in the same building, in the hope of greater efficiency in emergency response.

With the fault line running right underneath Salt Lake City, the new Public Safety Building is built to withstand an earthquake of up to a 7.5 magnitude and be fully operational immediately after. In a state so dedicated to emergency preparedness, this is a fitting model.

There's also multi-use space for public gatherings on the public plaza. It was in November 2009 when Salt Lake City voters overwhelmingly approved a new Public Safety Building to improve emergency services and provide greater capacity to respond to major disasters. The facility will serve Salt Lake City residents, visitors and businesses, much better meeting the needs of Utah's capital city.

Starting July 20, the new Public Safety Building will be open for tours. There are stops on every floor with accompanying videos. They'll feature police K9s, SWAT demonstrations, an interactive fire truck, 911 dispatch demonstrations, police motorcycles, Emergency Operations Center demonstrations and many other family-friendly activities. The free tours are open to the public and will continue through July 27.
