LONDON (AP) - A legal battle has opened in a London court over the burial of Richard III, the English king who died centuries ago. The first skirmish was inconclusive.

Since Richard's skeleton was discovered last year under a parking lot in the English city of Leicester, a dispute has simmered over where the remains should be reburied.

Distant relatives of the monarch are challenging plans to rebury the bones at Leicester's cathedral, contending that Richard wished to be buried in York. But three High Court judges adjourned the case Tuesday to allow Leicester City Council to play a role in the proceedings.

Richard was killed in a battle near Leicester in 1485, and he was quickly buried without a coffin.
