Sheryl has been teaching for 17 years. She started teaching at South Davis Jr, where she taught Spanish and English. Early in her career she seemed to have a gift for working with at-risk students and ended up being one of their strongest advocates. At South Davis she gave up her preparation period to run group therapy with the counselors for criminally involved students. Sheryl eventually transferred to Hunter Jr. High to teach English, but ended up running a "school within a school" for students who were not allowed to mix with the general population, teaching all subjects. She now teaches at Tooele High. To get the job there she had to agree to get a Special Education Endorsement. She has done this and will finish her Master's Degree in Special Ed. in December. She continues to advocate for these students, dragging many of them to graduation and helping them with post-graduation endeavors. Her students turn to her when they don't seem to have anyone else. She has been invited to the hospital for several births and once we found ourselves, at 10 o'clock at night, a place of refuge for one of her students who believed the police was after him. She is a homebound teacher for Special Ed. students who can't attend for all kinds of reasons. Sheryl is the grandmother of 9, mother of 11, and a foster mom. We've adopted our last 5 kids, 4 of these being drug babies. Sheryl is very dedicated to her profession, being on both state and district committees. She works miracles at school and unlike more famous teachers for whom movies have been made, has been able to keep a family intact.
