This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.

Americans spend billions of dollars on their pets each year. With such a high amount of money invested in one's pet, it's natural that a high caliber of pet care would also be expected.

Specialty veterinary care has been around since the 1970s, but it's only been in the last 10-to-15 years that it has become more common. Eye Care for Animals is the only animal eye care specialty clinic in the state of Utah. It offers a variety of services to fulfill pets' ophthalmologic needs including cataract removal, laser surgery for glaucoma and treating infections, lacerations and eye cancer.

Dr. Nicole MacLaren, a veterinary ophthalmologist who owns the clinic, tells me that about 3 percent of the cases seen at general veterinary practices involve eye problems. Her staff works closely with local veterinarians to provide care for more than Utah pets per year.

The practice is diverse and serves all types of animals from dogs and cats to alpacas, horses and eagles. Since the services the clinic provides are so specialized, it's a team effort to keep things running smoothly. Dr. MacLaren hopes to provide a good working environment and benefits package to encourage her employees to stay long-term.

The Salt Lake City Eye Care for Animals (ECFA) operated as an independent clinic until recently when it merged with a 24 ECFA clinics across the United States. It will soon open a brand new 15,000-square-foot multispecialty facility on 3300 South in Salt Lake City. Additional specialists in boarded surgery, internal medicine and critical care will join the clinic upon its completion in June.

Dr. MacLaren loves seeing the difference her work makes in both an animal and its owner's life. She also enjoys working with people who share her passion for animal care and looks forward to seeing Eye Care for Animals continue its reputation for excellence.

For Zions Bank, I'm Fred Ball. I'm speaking on business.
