This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.
For three generations, the Murdock Automotive family has been providing Utah residents with quality vehicles. The Murdock's new state-of-the-art Chevrolet dealership in Woods Cross is distinguished by the attention given to each customer and its relationship-oriented approach to sales. Many of the employees have been with the company for more than 10 years.
Jack Olsen founded the first dealership in the early 1940s as Olsen Chevy Oldsmobile in Morgan, Utah. He expanded to include a second Olsen Chevrolet dealership in Layton. Later, Jack's sons-in-law, Kent Murdock and Sam Young, joined the business, eventually buying out their father-in-law, to run the dealership as co-owners. In 1982, Kent sold his interest in the company and came to Woods Cross to start Murdock Chevrolet.
While Kent remains the majority stockholder, his sons K.O. and Blake Murdock now run the dealership. They expanded and have dealerships in Tremonton, Logan and Orem, in addition to the Woods Cross location. Trucks account for their highest percentage of sales, but Chevy Tahoes are also popular. Interest is growing in the hybrid models of Tahoe and Malibu.
The Murdocks have found it interesting to watch the trends in automobile purchasing over the years. It's changed from having one vehicle per family, to having separate vehicles for different activities. In the 1970s, passenger cars equated to 70 percent of sales while trucks averaged 30 percent. Today, the situation is reversed so the majority of cars sold are SUVs, trucks and vans.
K.O. tells me that Murdock Chevrolet ranks as one of the top-selling Chevrolet dealerships in both Utah and Colorado. He hopes to see sales continue to increase as a result of the dealership's reputation for excellent customer service, quality products and its new state-of-the-art facility along I-15.
