It takes a unique and extraordinary individual to be in the retail rug business, especially when you're flying to places like Afghanistan to buy product. Jim Webber of Foothill Oriental Rugs got into the business right after college and found out he had a real knack for it.
Today Jim makes buying trips to this part of the world once or twice a year to hand pick every rug. That's no small feat when he's going places like Pakistan, Nepal, India, Tibet and the Afghan border. Half the product you'll find in his showroom at Foothill Oriental Rugs is items Jim has developed exclusively because of his experience. He'll design the product here and then have someone manufacture it halfway around the world. With a strong understanding of design, quality and color, Jim cherry picks the very best hand knotted rugs to bring back and sell.
Jim was so captivated by this part of the world that he founded the Nepal Cleft and Burn Center 12 years ago. He'll be holding a fundraiser to support this important cause May 3 at Foothill Oriental Rugs, 1460 Foothill Drive in Salt Lake City.
When he sees a hand knotted rug, he says there's a special spiritual energy about a product that is still made by hand on a loom the same today as it was centuries ago. Each piece is unique. And that's what he offers at Foothill Oriental Rugs.
