Fred Orgill started his first company in the living room of his home with a box of business cards and $150. To get the word out, he visited construction sites, knocked on doors and introduced himself and his product line. He was fortunate to develop strategic partnerships with start-up contractors.
Today, 30 years later, Fred has brought this ingenuity to his latest company, Designer Stairways & Specialty Millwork in Lehi. It has a wide range of products including wood and iron newels and balusters, treads, risers and trim. His trademark product remains beautiful designer stairways and stair parts. You'd have to see pictures to believe the craftsmanship on these! By the way, Fred is completely self taught in all the woodwork he does.
While stairways remain Fred's major expertise at Designer Stairways & Specialty Millwork, he's also developed a strong following for his custom furniture. When flat panel TVs first came on the market a few years ago, many entertainment centers weren't designed to fit them. So, Fred developed a line of custom entertainment centers that his customers couldn't get enough of. Other pieces of furniture followed.
Two of Fred's sons are now involved with the business and are exploring complementary new business ventures. Designer Stairways & Specialty Millwork is a great example of why the U.S. Chamber of Commerce has ranked Utah as one of the most enterprising states in the nation.
