Sterling Scholars awarded $50K in scholarships

SALT LAKE CITY — Thirteen high school students from throughout the Wasatch Front have been awarded nearly $50,000 in scholarships from KSL and the Deseret News.

One winner was named in thirteen different academic areas, including English, dance and computer technology. Awards were based on academics, leadership and citizenship.

Schools in along the Wasatch Front chose Sterling Scholars in the different categories before a second round of judging was held at Woods Cross High School. Winners were announced Wednesday.

Skyline High School students took home three of the awards. Mountain View and Westlake high schools each had two winners.

Along with scholarships from KSL and the Deseret News, most colleges and universities in Utah, as well as Brigham Young University-Idaho, offer financial assistance to winners of the award.

English: Indigo Cook, Skyline High School
Family & Consumer Sciences: Eric Charles Wilcox, Westlake High School
Foreign Language: Michael Boyd, Pioneer High School
Mathematics: Kasper Kubica, West High School
Music: Rachel Sorensen, Skyline High School
Skilled & Technical Sciences: Sarah Fletcher, Mountain View High School
Social Science: Janelle Delgadillo, Hunter High School
Speech & Drama: Lincoln M. Holbrook, Woods Cross High School
Visual Arts: Marc Allen, Northridge High School
Douglas F. Bates Community Service Award: Taylor Sorenson, Timpview High School
Philo T. Farnsworth Governor's Award: Justin Meiners, Mountain View High School
