WASHINGTON (AP) -- Penzeys Spices is recalling some jars of Hungarian Sweet Paprika, sold nationwide, because of the possibility of salmonella contamination.
The Brookfield, Wis., company said the recall involves 1,968 2.5-ounce jars of the spice sold between Feb. 4 and April 5. The recalled jars are marked with the code 47551.
The company distributes spices through mail order and Penzeys Spices stores in 12 states.
Routine testing by Florida inspectors revealed salmonella in one jar, Penzeys said.
The recall comes weeks after Penzeys recalled packages of another paprika version, Hungarian Half-Sharp, because of possible salmonella contamination.
Young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are especially vulnerable to infection from salmonella. It can be fatal. Symptoms include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
The company said no reports of illness have been received.
Consumers may return the recalled spice to the nearest Penzeys Spice store or contact the company for refund information at 1-800-741-7787.
