SALT LAKE CITY -- A common New Year's resolution is to get organized, whether you're organizing papers or cupboards or rooms.
Professional organizer Vicki Winterton showed us how to get started. She suggests a formula, called SPARK.
- Sort
Categorize by putting likes with likes
For example, a drawer organizer for utensils allows you to put spoons with spoons, forks with forks, and so on. A closet can be organized likewise with similar clothing items stored together. - Purge
*Get rid of the "stuff" that is not important to you
She suggests putting things into three categories: Give away, put away and throw away. - Assign a Home
Zone by similar categories or activities
Decide where the items that have been categorized will be stored. Kitchens can be made into food storage and food preparation zones. - Round-up Containers
- Know what you have
- Make sure they're: a) sturdy, b) easy to handle, c) the right size, and d) they have the look you like
- Label both front and back sides of the container
- Keep it up
*Daily (5 to 15 minutes per space)
\* Expect others to help maintain
This can be done in about 2 minutes a day.
