Dusseldorf, Germany (dpa) - A cultural festival in western Germany featuring artists from the three Baltic states will be a colourful "firework" that includes dance, drama, films, exhibitions and music, a senior North Rhine Westphalia state official said Wednesday.
It is hoped that the May-June festival will establish a lasting relationship between German audiences and the artists from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, Hans-Heinrich Grosse-Brockhoff, state secretary for cultural affairs, said.
Some 500 arts professionals will travel to Germany to take part in the festival, which features about 150 events in eight cities. The state government has contributed 250,000 euros (310,000 dollars) for the festival, while the host cities will provide a total of 1.2 million euros.
The cities that will be hosting events are Dusseldorf, Dortmund, Bielefeld, Bonn, Duisburg, Cologne, Muenster and Oberhausen. Among concerts planned is a performance of Estonian church music in Cologne's Cathedral, by the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, on May 13.
