MOULTRIE, Georgia — A Georgia woman's battle with breast cancer may have helped save her husband's life.

It was in support of Dolly Stringer, 47, that her husband, Bud Stringer, 48, shaved his head. Dolly was diagnosed with breast cancer in April and when she shaved her head in August in preparation for chemotherapy, Bud followed suit.

It was then that Bud found an irregular spot on his head that turned out to be stage 3 melanoma.

"I jumped in the room, and said, 'Hey guys, what do you think?!' They said, 'Wow, that's a big ugly black mark on the top of your head.' And I said, 'What are you talking about?'" Bud told WFLX.

Both the Stringers have been declared cancer-free since the discovery two months ago, although they have treatments remaining.

"We're the lucky ones. We just needed time and good doctors," Bud told The Moultrie Observer.

The Stringers were told that had Bud's cancer gone undiscovered, he would not have survived until Christmas.

"By the time he would have had symptoms, it would have been too late," Dolly said.

Community members have come together in support of the Stringers, holding fundraisers and races to help with medical bills, according to WALB.
