Chris: This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business. Fred: And this is Fred Ball for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.
Chris: For the next several programs we're doing a special feature in honor of Fred's 80th birthday at the end of this week. We're going to be co-hosting each of the programs. We had a chance to meet with Layton Construction.
Fred: Layton Construction is a company founded on the idea of predictable outcomes, and it's part of what's made them successful. This Sandy construction company has grown to include over 500 employees with active projects in 12 different states. They're contributing to Utah's employment base, which at 6 percent unemployment, is lower than the national average and is one of the lowest in the nation.
Chris: You would recognize Layton Construction's work in some high-profile projects around the state including work on the brand new USTAR Building on the U of U campus, Primary Children's Medical Center, the new Questar building, and for the Performing Arts Center in downtown to begin construction in late 2013. Next year Layton Construction will be celebrating their 60th anniversary.
Fred: What an interesting story about Alan Layton's inspiration for founding Layton Construction in 1953. As a youth, some engineers working on a construction project by his home in Kaysville let Alan come look at their surveying equipment, and the rest, as they say, is history. As an adult, he started Layton Construction.
Chris: Company president David Layton says the company has focused on repeat business, so they really take care of their customers. They have long-term established relationships, and this is where some of their work in other states has come from. Clients they're already serving expand around the U.S., taking Layton with them as their construction firm of choice.
Fred: Layton Construction has a three-pronged approach to all of their jobs with a focus on budget, quality and expectation. Exercising only the best integrity is another important focus for this company, so you know your project will be completed on time, in budget, in exactly the way you requested.
