LOS ANGELES, Apr 20, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- A woman who puts out tons of birdseed a year around Hollywood has Los Angeles officials so upset they are considering a city-wide bird-feeding ban.
The city bans bird feeding only from a specified downtown area.
Laura Dodson, president of the Argyle Civic Association, says the group has identified 29 spots where the Bird Lady of Hollywood feeds her feathered friends.
"I've collected birdseed bags she's discarded," Dodson said. "We calculate she spreads 112 tons a year above Sunset Boulevard, centering on Vine Street."
On one traffic island where the association would like to plant palm trees, the Bird Lady uses three 25-pound bags a day, Dodson said.
The problem isn't the pigeons as much as what they leave behind them -- white droppings that end up on cars, sidewalks and railings. An executive with Caltrans -- the state's transportation agency -- said droppings are difficult to clean up because they form a drain-clogging slurry in water.
