This is Lane Beattie of the Salt Lake Chamber with your Utah Business Report.
As part of the Chamber's 125th anniversary, we want to share the rich history of the members who have made the Chamber so successful.
In 1929, 14-year old Les Olson took responsibility for his family after the death of his father, even leaving school to do so. In a difficult economy, he found errand boy work at ZCMI, starting a near 30-year career with them.
One night, Les told his wife Reva and their dozen children that he quit his job and wanted to start a family business. All 12 children emptied their piggy banks to "buy in" to the new venture. Shortly thereafter, Les Olson Company was born.
Les focused his efforts on customer service, continually reminding his employees that he was not their boss—the customer was.
Fifty-six years later, the company is still centered on the belief that excellent customer service is essential to continued success.
