In the 1984 classic, "The Karate Kid". the strict but lovable Mr. Miyagi teaches young Daniel that karate is mastery over self and that fighting is the last way to solve a problem. It's all about perfecting one's character.

That's very similar to what karate students of Ken Higa are learning - life lessons that are making an impact.

They are learning responsibility, self-discipline, leadership, and most of all, hard work. Higa advocates two important priorities that teach those principles.

"We have to get our Eagle and go on a mission if we're gonna have a secondary black belt," said a 15-year-old student named Tyler.

Higa keeps a record of his black belts and missionaries. He even makes posters to show where they'll serve. Gospel principles permeate his studio and teachings and will serve these kids for years.

"Even after graduation, graduating the program, it doesn't end," said a second degree black belt named Ryan. "We still, as black belts, have the responsibility to take the lessons we've learned here and keep them throughout the rest of our lives."
