This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.
Robert Speirs started his plumbing company, Robert W. Speirs Plumbing, 51 years ago out of the back of his car. He had just earned his accounting degree from the U and was plumbing on the side. He spent 9 years as the sole employee until his client base was big enough he had to hire three more plumbers.
Today, Kaysville-based Robert W. Speirs Plumbing has over 30 trucks and around 50 employees. The company has also brought in the second and third generations with Robert's daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Jerry Taylor, heading the business and his grandson, Jared Taylor, as the CFO. This is no small feat considering only 10 percent of family businesses successfully transition into the third generation.
Jared is following in his grandfather's footsteps, since he first started working in the warehouse at age three. He became one of Utah's youngest journeyman plumbers when he completed his 8,000 hours and four years of training one year after graduating from high school! He worked his way up from plumbing to his current position as CFO.
Their customers love this enough so Robert W. Speirs Plumbing is a major word of mouth business with repeat customers and referrals. They're serving the second and third generation from their original clients. Since they maintain and own all their equipment, they can offer more competitive pricing.
Jared says Robert W. Speirs Plumbing is big enough to have all the equipment but small enough to still care.
For Zions Bank, I'm Chris Redgrave, speaking on business.
