This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.
When you talk to Travis Sessions, president and CEO of Biomerics, he'll tell you the long-term vision of his medical polymer company is to deliver innovative biomaterials for implantable medical devices. To accomplish this, he's partnering with local medical companies. That's because Salt Lake City is a key hub for vascular access medical device companies in the United States.
Biometrics biomaterials are used in medical catheters to deliver much-needed medicine or to provide direct access to the patient. Travis has significant experience in medical polymers including a background in chemical engineering and his MBA. He discovered an unmet marketing need to bridge the technology and regulatory gap between medical device manufacturers and the plastics industry. The opportunity was to develop new materials to bring into the medical arena.
After Travis met with Dell Loy Hansen of Utah Plastics Company, they discovered a synergistic business model to quickly enhance Biometrics' strategic plan. So, in September 2009, the two companies merged.
Today, Biomerics, headquartered in Salt Lake City, is a leading and innovative polymer solution provider to the medical device and biotech industries and a contract manufacturer for the medical device and biotech industries. What this means is they specialize in providing biomaterials and compounds to injection molding for the world's leading medical device corporations. They specialize in solutions for vascular access, interventional cardiology, surgical and orthopedic markets.
Biomerics just hosted an open house to celebrate their 10,000 square foot plant expansion and to highlight their Utah-based customers' products. The expansion includes a class 100,000 clean room and new shipping, packaging and fulfillment operations. Biomerics' growth is a result of Utah's focus on and investment in the life science industry which, by the way, accounts for over 26,000 jobs in Utah with an average salary over 50 percent higher than the state average.
Biomerics' success is also a result of dedication to vertical integrated technology and premier original equipment manufacturing. The market demand for their products has lead to double-digit growth, year over year for the last three years.
