This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.
Think about having experience with international business and then bringing it home to open shop locally. In talking with Rob Spangler, one of the owners of Trader Roberts and Spangler in Bountiful, he's now taking his experience as the former CFO of Xango where he traveled to six continents and is using it to benefit small businesses right here in Utah.
The other owners, Dave Roberts and Curtis Trader, both worked for one of the "Big 4" international accounting firms for several years before opening Trader Roberts and Spangler just over two years ago. This expertise is unique and I'm sure is one of the reasons their business has such a strong mix of clients, including 60 percent local, 30 percent national and 10 percent international.
These guys are on top of current trends in the complex business world to help their clients successfully navigate. They have their finger on the pulse of tax law changes from Salt Lake to Washington, D.C. and maintain relationships from Europe to Southeast Asia, so the advice they give will be timely and relevant.
A best practice for Trader Roberts and Spangler is to develop and successfully maintain strong relationships with clients. This involves constant and clear communication. They're also technically competent and proactive in adding these new technologies into the firm as they become available. One of the big ones right now is a virtual infrastructure that allows them to create a signature for clients to securely connect and send documents to them from anywhere in the world. This is smart since digital business was projected to grow by almost 12 percent from 2010 to 2011.
These strategies are working for Trader Roberts and Spangler since they've grown 40 percent in a down economy and now have 10 employees, adding to employment base, which Kiplinger recently ranked as No. 1 in the nation. They also have great client retention, now serving the third generation from some of their original customers after 30 years in the business.
For Zions Bank, I'm Chris Redgrave, speaking on business.
