Sunday's peaceful "Dignity March" through downtown Salt Lake City followed by Monday's rally at the City and County Building were undeniably impressive.
That the same thing happened on even larger scales in dozens of cities across the nation sent an irrefutable message that this is a movement with momentum - one that cannot be ignored by the politicians in Washington. Our elected leaders have a responsibility along with an opportunity to find a solution to the conundrum of illegal immigration.
The demonstrations are destined to have a significant impact. They generate as much discussion at the dinner table as they do in the halls of congress. And as positions become defined by common citizens, those with power to act, will hear with greater clarity the will of the people.
KSL believes they will hear a resounding call for securing the nation's southern border. The open flow of illegal immigrants must be stopped. But they will also hear pleas for common sense solutions. Establishing a pathway to legitimacy is a key to any resolution. It would be impractical to further criminalize the millions of illegals already here, while summarily sending all of them back would be unrealistic.
The demonstrations, in a timely way, have thrust immigration reform to the forefront of key national issues. Let it become a catalyst for our lawmakers to do something truly significant.
