NEW YORK -- Nearly 1,000 people packed into the New Amsterdam Theatre in Times Square Monday afternoon to celebrate the life of Dana Reeve, who died March 6 of lung cancer.
Robin Williams, a family friend and the college classmate of Reeve's late husband, Christopher Reeve, told USA TODAY on Saturday: "It's wonderful because it's in a theater. She was a Broadway-type person, so it will be great to have the memorial be at a place she'd want to be."
Her son, Will Reeve, 13, paused for photos with Matthew and Alexandra, Christopher Reeve's children with Gae Exton. Will smiled and said he "was doing good."
Attendees ranged from Will's classmates to celebrities from stage, screen, sports and politics. They included Susan Sarandon, Norah Jones, Glenn Close, Katie Couric, Matthew Broderick, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Blythe Danner, Joe Torre and Patrick Kennedy.
"She was a sweet woman who was handed an extremely cruel fate," Paula Zahn said.
As a tribute to Reeve and her husband, attendees wore Superman necklaces, which were sold through the Christopher Reeve Foundation, an organization that promotes research on paralysis.
