Today's editorial is directed toward the Bureau of Land Management, via Pam Schuller. She's the BLM employee Senator Orrin Hatch urged every Utahn to write and express unequivocal opposition to Private Fuel Storage's request for permission to build an intermodal transfer facility on BLM land for transporting spent nuclear fuel to a proposed storage site on the Goshute Indian Reservation in Skull Valley.
Dear Ms Schuller:
The PFS proposal is reckless and not in the public interest.
The proposed storage site sits just 40-50 miles upwind from the heavily populated Wasatch Front. Why authorize something that would needlessly endanger so many people?
The federal government, your boss, has utterly failed to develop a comprehensive policy for dealing with spent nuclear waste. Until that issue is resolved, keep the stuff where it is and don't penalize the people of Utah because of Eastern misperceptions about our "wide open spaces."
And Ms. Schuller, don't let anyone kid you into thinking the Skull Valley site would be "temporary." Anyone with any sense can see beyond that blatant untruth.
Sincerely,
The KSL Editorial Board.
