TAMPA, Fla., Mar 14, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- The parents and siblings of Terri Schiavo have given their version of the 15 years before her death in a Florida hospice in a new book.
"A Life That Matters: The Legacy of Terri Schiavo -- A Lesson for Us All" includes little new information, the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times reports. As they did during the many court hearings, Mary and Bob Schindler and their children accuse Terri Schiavo's husband, Michael Schiavo, of abusing her and say that she was aware of what was going on around her.
An autopsy requested by Michael Schiavo after his wife's feeding tube was withdrawn found that her brain had deteriorated, that she was blind and had had no possibility of ever regaining consciousness.
In the book, the Schindlers say they were not prepared to become national celebrities as they fought in the courts, the Florida Legislature and the U.S. Congress to prevent the removal of Terri Schiavo's feeding tube. Mary Schindler writes that she was surprised at memorial services when people came up and asked for autographs.
