WASHINGTON, Mar 14, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- The wife of Hawaii's senior senator has died at the age of 81 of complications from colon cancer.

Margaret Awamura Inouye passed away Monday at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, the Honolulu Star Bulletin reports.

"As she has done throughout her life, Maggie handled her difficult situation without complaint, and with dignity and grace," Sen. Daniel Inouye said in a statement.

The couple met in 1947, while Inouye was a student at the University of Hawaii after military service in World War II that cost him his right arm. Inouye proposed on their second date, and the Inouyes married in 1949.

Margaret Inouye, who already had a master's degree in teaching from Columbia, supported her husband while he completed college and law school. She helped him build the Democratic Party in Hawaii and went to Washington with him when he was elected to Congress from the new state.

Walter Dods, retired chairman of the First Hawaiian Bank, headed several Inouye campaigns. He told the Star-Bulletin that Margaret Inouye was never pushy but was always there for campaign staff needing comfort or advice.
