This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.

It all started in the early 50s, when Robert Rice from the well-known Rice family decided to get into bodybuilding as a way to increase his self esteem and confidence. It really worked out for him since he was named Mr. Utah in 1954. He became one of the pioneers for health clubs in the U.S., working alongside people like Jack LaLanne in developing the business.

Things really took off after he became business partners with Ken Melby, and they started building health clubs together. Right here in Utah this company created the country's largest chain which included 240 centers across the United States and Canada until the early 70s when they sold it. However, fitness clubs were in their blood, so they started establishing health clubs in states where their non-compete agreement didn't apply. Robert also brought his sons, Scott and Ren, into the business.

The Rice family has been an important voice in the health club industry for over 60 years. Scott and Ren Rice, the current owners of Rice Industries in Salt Lake City, are carrying on their father's legacy of establishing high-quality health clubs.

Today Rice Industries has diversified. In addition to establishing health clubs, they also operate a company that provides billing for 200 health clubs around the country. It's growing like crazy! Between their headquarters here and gyms they operate, they have about 700 employees, with 150 in Utah alone. Job sustainability and job creation are critical for our economic recovery in Utah and helping Utah lead in the nation.

Investing in your health is important for your quality of life and because it saves you money. Think about it. Living a healthier lifestyle decreases the amount of money you spend on healthcare. And with insurance rising at a rate of around 20 percent per year, it's one sure way to save.

Rice Industries is now entering the third generation who is running the personal training operation in New Orleans and also handling billing and payments. They continue to thrive because we will always invest in their health.

For Zions Bank, I'm Chris Redgrave, speaking on business.
