This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.

One of the major trends we've seen in the last few years is a change to water-wise landscaping. Being water wise doesn't mean not having grass; it just means using the proper plant selection. BioGrass Sod Farms can help with that.

Planting grass is more economical than people think because an irrigated BioGrass lawn not only cleans the air, potentially converting enough carbon dioxide into oxygen for your whole neighborhood to breathe, it also lowers air conditioning bills by cooling the ground around your home.

According to research, the combined front lawns of eight houses have the cooling power of 70 tons of air conditioning. On a hot summer day grass is usually 30 degrees cooler than asphalt and 14 degrees cooler than bare soil. BioGrass Sod Farms really has it figured out to tap into this market.

Warren Bell, owner of this Sandy company, provides six different types of grass for homeowner, commercial and athletic use. Some of these are native grasses designed to thrive in the climate and need a minimum of care. Athletic grasses are intended to be durable so they can handle the wear and tear from heavy use.

These are species like Bella Bluegrass, a dwarf grass that grows more slowly, so you don't have to mow your lawn as often. You can see what it looks like at the newly renovated Gallivan Center in downtown Salt Lake City. Their native grass mix can be seen along the Legacy Highway or at the new Natural History Museum of Utah.

Here's an interesting fact. It takes 40,000 years for rocks to break down enough to create good quality topsoil. I'm sure you can imagine why it can be as valuable as gold.

Since Warren, his brothers and their business partner Don Heslop founded the business 30 years ago, they've expanded their selection from one type of grass to six. In addition to different types of sod, they also offer organic fertilizers, grass seeds and native seeds in their office at 9880 South State in Sandy.
