Yahoo war reporter Kevin Sites was named Tuesday to receive the Daniel Pearl Award for Courage and and Integrity in Journalism, the Los Angeles Press Club announced Tuesday.
The star of the leading Internet portal's "Kevin Sites in the Hot Zone" news feature was chosen for his "commitment to truth" and his "focus on human faces," the club said in a statement.
The award is named after Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, who was brutally murdered in Karachi, Pakistan in 2002 as he pursued a story on Al-Qaeda.
Pearl's parents recommended Sites for this year's award, saying: "His style of work, the solitary commitment to truth, the selection of the newsworthy, the focus on the human faces, and the human fate -- it all mirrors the works of Danny."
Sites was hired by Yahoo as its first reporter and given a year's assignment to cover armed conflicts around the world.
"Daniel Pearl lived that life and paid the ultimate sacrifice for it," Sites said when he learned of the award.
"To be honored in his name will be a constant reminder to work to his standards every day."
The award will be presented in a Los Angeles gala on June 24.
