The first question many people who visit Silver Star Ski & Sport in Park City ask is, "Where's the dogs?" Of course they're referring to owner Todd Fischer's two bulldogs, Vidalia and Tallulah, the official shop mascots.
You'll see them wandering around the property, accepting an affectionate head scratch or back rub from customers. They've become so popular that people started asking for dog memorabilia. So, Todd created Team Onion, a line of biking jerseys with Vidalia's face on them. You can also buy T-shirts, post cards or stickers of the dogs which you see on kids' helmets all over Park City.
Silver Star Ski & Sport offers a wide variety of skiing and snowboarding equipment and rentals. You can get hats, gloves, ski goggles and helmets. It's located at the base of Park City Mountain Resort's Silver Star lift. One of Todd's main goals is to rotate out his rental equipment every other year to keep it in excellent condition. And how's this for a smart business move? He holds a sale twice a year, once in the fall and again in the spring, to sell the demo equipment. This year's fall sale starts on August 20.
When the snow's not flying, Silver Star Ski & Sport supports cyclists. They sell bikes and biking accessories, including brands like GT and Schwinn. In case you're not ready to buy, you can rent a bike for the day. Every Thursday night in the summer they host Cruiserpalooza, a family-friendly bike ride. During my visit, several of the bikes already had reserved signs for that night's ride.
New this year, Silver Star is offering paddleboard rentals. They're the only place in Park City where you can rent one. This is such a wise idea since paddleboarding is one of the fastest growing sports in the U.S.
A 13-year veteran of the area, Todd is a dialed in owner. He's worked for a major sporting company and as a golf pro. But he couldn't be happier with his current career at Silver Star Ski & Sport. Who wouldn't when you can bring your dogs to work every day?
