Way to go Ted Ligety and Shauna Rohbock!
The two Utah born and raised Olympians have made all of us proud with their medal-winning performances in Torino.
With his gold medal victory in the men's combined, Park City's Ligety joins an elite group of home-grown athletes. In the state's history, only two other native sons have captured Olympic gold. He's the first to do it in the winter games. What a stunning accomplishment!
Then there is Orem's Shauna Rohbock. After being bumped from the USA's number-one sled on her home-turf in 2002, she rebounded this year and captured the silver medal in the women's bobsled competition.
And we shouldn't overlook the Utah-based medal winners who call Utah home because they live here and train at the fabulous facilities built for 2002.
The list includes gold medalists Joey Cheek and Chad Hedrick in speedskating, and Shaun White in snowboarding's halfpipe.
In KSL's view, the fact dozens of athletes with Utah ties competed in the games, while some of them claimed medals, validates the state's commitment to building enduring facilities for the 2002 games. We suspect what we witnessed this year offers a mere glimpse of what the future holds for home-grown Utah Olympians. Utahns can look forward with satisfaction as this dimension of their Olympic legacy expands in coming years.
