On Nov.4, Deb Remmerde made five of her first seven free throw attempts of the season for Northwestern (Iowa). She then made her last six in that game -- and hasn't missed since.
The four she hit Monday night against Sioux Falls (S.D.) brought her streak to 127, breaking all known records for organized basketball from high school through the NBA.
"For me, it's just having confidence when I step to the line that it's going in the hole, and just sticking with the same routine," said Remmerde (REM-er-dee).
After a semester at Iowa, she transferred to Northwestern, close to the farm where she grew up and led Rock Valley High to a state championship. She led the NAIA in scoring last year as a freshman, averaging 28.2 points. She nudged this season's average up to 30.4 with Monday night's 43-point outing, in which she shot 16-for-24 from the field, 7-for-9 from three-point range.
But the fact she hasn't missed a foul shot in the 23 games since the opener at Mid-America Nazarene (Kan.) is attracting attention. She surpassed the last recorded mark, the high school boys record of 126, with her 4-for-4 game Monday.
"I've been on and off the phone a lot," she said. "I'm just taking it all in stride. I think the opposing crowds are aware of it now. I just try to have that confidence on the road, too."
She takes the streak on the road tonight as the Red Raiders (22-2, 12-2 Great Plains Athletic Conference) visit Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.).
