This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.
Tom Plofchan has had a couple of big love affairs in his life, but the town of Alta and the beautiful topography surrounding it won out about 40 years ago. Tom discovered this Utah gem while doing various ski resort jobs including ski instructing and resort management.
In the beginning, he lived at the Alta lodge where he held down a management job, was a private ski instructor and continued his passion for photography that started when he got his first camera at 13 and his own dark room at 15. He continued his photography by teaching it while in the Navy during the Korean War.
To give you a sense of Tom's talent, he has been featured in Skiing magazine, Life, Sports Illustrated, the Time Life books and the Alta calendar. If you visit altaphotohaus.com, hos spelled as h-a-u-s, you can see he was influenced by his love for Austria. You'll also find some of the photos that are iconic to the Little Cottonwood area, including the famous photo of Alf Engen, a pioneer in the skiing industry, on his skis jumping over the road leading up to Alta Ski Resort.
Did you know just a few years ago Skiing magazine named the Alta/Snowbird product as No. 1 resort in North America? Tom isn't the only one who loves this resort.
It all started years ago when Tom was just getting publicity for the quality of pictures he was taking of this stunning canyon in all four seasons. People were requesting copies of the photos, and the next thing you know Tom is in business. His charming shop, Alta Photo Haus, is across the road from the entry to the Alta Lodge.
Besides his stunning photos, he has some well-made reversible fleece vests with embroidery on both sides as well as great t-shirts priced better than most. He has a different supplier so his items are unique to the area. This has created a great return customer base. Give yourself a visual treat and check out his pictures at altaphotohaus.com.
