Over the past couple years, competitive trail running in the United States has gone from an underground community to a popular extreme sports venue. Currently, trail running and off-road triathlon are considered the sixth most popular extreme sports in the U.S.
The running community in Utah has a great store they can turn to for all their running needs: Runner's Corner in Orem, owned by Hawk and Cheryl Harper.
Let me tell you the experience Hawk and Cheryl bring to the table. Hawk has run 75 marathons while Cheryl has run around 50 and both have won the St. George marathon. Their children have all won at least one state championship in running, and their son holds the world best marathon time for children 12 and under.
Recent research indicates running burns approximately 30 percent more calories than walking, so you need good shoes. When you look for shoes here, it's not about selling you the most expensive shoe but finding the one that works for you. Employees don't work on a commission basis, so there's no pressure. Although most of them are experienced runners, they're trained to provide great service first and be a runner second.
In addition to buying shoes and other gear, you can also have your technique checked. Twice a month, Runner's Corner offers a good form running clinic where each participant is shown how to improve their technique.
And the secret's getting out. The Harpers have had clients from all over who've come to their store. One day Hawk came in early only to hear someone knocking on the door. He wasn't open yet but let the person in to look. The next thing he knew, several other people waiting out in the parking lot all asked to come in. He ended up with 14 people in the store before it opened and none of them was from Utah!
Later this month Hawk and Cheryl will be opening their new location of Runner's Corner near Costco in Orem, three blocks east of their current location.
