This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.
For the longest time I've thought it's all about blueberries, but I just learned I'm wrong. Healthy Utah Magazine says the top five fruits you should be eating are blackberries, strawberries, oranges, kiwi and raspberries.
Blackberries are useful for their antioxidant levels and the copious amounts of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Strawberries have vitamin C and antioxidants. Oranges have vitamins A and C and antioxidants. Doctors have also been using orange peel extracts to fight certain types of cancer. Kiwi has vitamins C and K as well as potassium which apparently most of us lack, and it's essential for a healthy heart. Finally, raspberries are helpful because just one serving provides almost 50 percent of our daily vitamin C requirement, and it fortifies our body against so many diseases.
In meeting with John Anderson, he discovered no one was connecting Utah with health information so he set up uthealth.com. John and his team are committed to improving health awareness through fitness and connecting readers with exercise groups.
Health is a hot topic right now with the obesity epidemic in our country. Of the 1,440 minutes in a day, we are told to schedule at least 30 per day for physical activity. The Healthy People 2020 initiative, launched at the beginning of this year, is a science-based 10-year initiative to improve our overall health and quality of life. Publications like Healthy Utah are helping in this effort since they provide essential information on how to make changes and live a healthier life.
John is no stranger to medicine or health issues. He has his MBA and has worked in health organization management for years. He decided he wanted his own business so he developed the website that pre-dated the print magazine.
The Healthy Utah team figures on average, people spend 43 minutes reading each issue of Healthy Utah. With 23,000 magazines, this equals around 150,000 readers. John is using QR codes to track the success of the magazine's marketing efforts and is creating a digital version.
