It is easy to take for granted many of the comforts of modern life Utahns enjoy, including the ready supply of natural gas used to heat our homes and businesses.
The KSL Editorial Board recently enjoyed an insightful visit from the top brass of Questar, Utah's supplier of natural gas. They didn't come to ask for editorial support for one cause or another, but merely to bring us up to date on what this vital public utility is doing. Their report was impressive and deserving of broader dissemination.
They reminded us that residential rates for natural gas in Utah are the lowest in the continental United States. They expect the price of natural gas to remain stable for the foreseeable future. And they reported an abundant supply of gas, enough to sustain current levels of use another hundred years.
If the Questar executives had a plea, it was for their customers to become more conservation minded. The company is investing some $35 million annually through its ThermWise program to offer home energy use audits along with rebates for weatherization and appliance replacement.
Their plea for wise use of their product, in KSL's view, should be heeded. Natural gas, though relatively inexpensive and abundant, is a resource none of us should take for granted.
