This is Chris Redgrave, the new voice for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.

As a Southern California native, Terry Martin enjoyed his regular commute to work, which took him past the beautiful Red Mountains in Ivins, Utah. Because he worked in the ski resort development business in Utah, it was only natural for him to look at Red Mountain and dream about all the possibilities such a beautiful area could hold.

Terry decided to leave building ski resorts and was heading back to So. California when he stopped by Dick's Café in St. George for a quick breakfast. As fate would have it, he ran into a realtor friend who told him about a ranch that he was preparing to list. Terry discovered the ranch was located in the heart of the Red Mountains he had always admired.

So, 1,300 acres later, he purchased his dream. He called it Kayenta… a Desert Community. It means "water from the rock" in Navajo. Terry has turned Kayenta into what he calls a "unique community, diverse yet cohesive; a place where privacy is respected and a strong sense of community prevails."

The aesthetics and color scheme of the areas were essential to Terry as he designed the community's homes to take advantage of the natural beauty the area is famous for. The backdrop of the Red Mountains is breathtaking. The parcels come in one-acre lots where owners are required to keep 75 percent completely natural.

Terry's business background has been helpful in making solid decisions about this pristine project. He also considered his clients' needs and built an on-site storage facility and other recreational amenities. This storage site also supports the Kayenta's aesthetics.

One of Kayenta's distinctions is the Coyote Gulch Art Village that boasts some of the area's finest art galleries and artists' studios. And there's a labyrinth with wonderful sculptures, an open air theater and a café, that add to the dedication of art in the desert.

If you have an opportunity to sit with Terry, you will find this talented storyteller to be engaging as he unfolds the history of how Kayenta was created. There are still parcels left for anyone with spirit and an interest in desert living. You can visit kayentahomes.com for more information or to see pictures.
