Do you have a hobby that involves fabric? Or are you interested in learning more about sewing? If so, Cathy and Ruthi Miller are happy to assist through their business, Cottonwood Fabrics in Sandy.

Cottonwood Fabrics offers a selection of fabrics for all types of uses from quilts to apparel to accessories. Ruthi says when she and her mother, Cathy, were developing their business focus, they decided to offer high-quality fabrics for a reasonable price. Although their store has been open for only a few months, it has already been well received in the area.

The Millers are now in the process of organizing classes. They hope to have a full schedule of quilting, apparel-making and beginning sewing classes and eventually offer instruction in heirloom dressmaking. The all-ages beginner class will teach basic sewing skills needed to make aprons, placemats, pillowcases and pajama pants. Ruthi feels the classroom options are an integral part of most fabric stores.

Sewing has always been one of Ruthi's favorite pastimes. Prior to starting Cottonwood Fabrics, Ruthi worked in retail for more than 20 years with the last few years spent managing the apparel department for a national chain store. Several months ago she became frustrated while trying to make costumes for her daughters. There was only one place in the area where she could get costume fabric, and it had an expensive and limited selection. She decided the solution would be to open a fabric store of her own and she soon began taking the necessary steps to do so. Cottonwood Fabrics opened in April 2010.

Cathy and Ruthi are working on creating a better website for their business. They hope to continue building their clientele and increasing their store's presence in the neighborhood. Cottonwood Fabrics is distinguished by its affordable, eclectic fabric selection, designed to spark and satisfy quilters, crafters and the creative side of sewing.
