Several important traffic safety concerns come to mind as Utahns head into the Memorial Day weekend and the traditional beginning of the summer travel season.
-First, a new study by the Utah Department of Health reveals that nearly 75- percent of all Utah adult drivers talk on a cell phone daily while behind the wheel. Moreover, half of teen drivers admit they text and drive daily. Those are chilling facts. Both distracting activities are dangerous and can be fatal. KSL urges Utah drivers to use cell phones wisely, and especially, not to text while driving.
-Next, the recent tragic death of Sevier County Sheriff Sgt. Franco Aguilar offers a reminder of how important it is for motorists to move over when passing an accident scene or another motorist stopped by a police officer. Aguilar, sadly, was hit and killed by a passing car while helping at a traffic accident along I-70.
-Finally, with all of the road construction taking place in Utah this summer, motorists should plan ahead for delays and be prepared to exercise a great deal of patience. The frustration level is sure to be high.
It will, in KSL's view, take an extra effort by every motorist to make holiday and summer travel as safe as possible.
