Every year, more than two million home burglaries take place in the United States and thousands of lives are affected by fires and other in-home emergencies. What steps can be taken to protect your home and family?

Steven Hafen, chief operating officer of Pinnacle Security, would advise starting with a high-quality security system to alert you to dangers before they happen. Pinnacle Security provides a wide variety of home security solutions, including door and window sensors, motion detectors, smoke and fire detectors and even medical monitoring devices. One of the Orem company's latest products, released this year, is a high-tech touch screen with an intuitive interface that customers can use to arm and disarm the security system, receive weather updates and set the thermostat even while the home is unoccupied. The system features a message marquee that provides easy communication with Pinnacle representatives and another feature that enables consumers to monitor their home through the Internet or other mobile devices when they're away from home.

Entrepreneurs Kelly Walker and Steve Zolman founded Pinnacle Security in 2001 while they were college students. They saw an opportunity for selling residential security systems and became a dealer for ADT. By 2006, they were ADT's largest dealer, and a year later they decided to break away and become their own full-service security company. In 2008, Golden Gate Capital acquired the company and has been an important partner in supporting its development. Building on its growth rate of 60 percent year-over-year, the company has outlined a five-year goal to become one of the top five players in the residential security market.

Steve says the growth rate and the future goals illustrate Pinnacle Security's recent success. While many companies are laying people off, Pinnacle has been hiring. In fact, last year, Pinnacle employed more than 800 people at its corporate office and close to 2,000 sales reps and technicians. He says the success is directly tied to its customer-focused approach and quality product selection.
