SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The Pentagon identified a Utah man among the three Army Rangers killed in the suicide bombing northwest of Baghdad.
Staff Sgt. Nino D. Livaudais, 23, of Utah, was killed in western Iraq Friday when a car exploded at a special operations checkpoint, the U.S. Central Command said. No hometown was listed for Livaudais.
Livaudais and the other two soldiers killed were in the 3rd Battalion of the 75th Ranger Regiment, based at Fort Benning, Ga.
The soldiers were approaching the car at the checkpoint after a pregnant woman stepped out of the vehicle and began screaming in fear, a Central Command statement said.
The woman and the car's driver were also killed, Central Command said.
Brig. Gen. Vincent Brooks, Central Command deputy director of operations, said it was impossible to know if the woman voluntarily took part in the attack.
Livaudais is the second soldier with Utah ties to be killed in the war.
Staff Sgt. James W. Cawley, 41, of Layton, was killed March 29 when he was accidentally struck by a Humvee.
Cawley, a 2nd Battalion 23rd Regiment Marine reservist, was also a detective with the Salt Lake City police department.
