With the new year--Salt Lake's city council is gearing up to take a fresh look at the Main Street dispute.

Tonight the council will begin careful consideration of a deal proposed by Mayor Rocky Anderson last year that would give up the city's easement to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints--in exchange for some land that would be used for a community center on Salt Lake's west side.

Council members say they want to study their options carefully--in hopes picking a solution that won't later be overturned in court.

(Jill Remington Love/City Council Member:) "AND YOU KNOW THAT'S BEEN TRICKIER THAN PEOPLE REALIZE. OUR ATTORNEYS HAVE TOLD US FROM THE BEGINNING THAT ALMOST ANY OPTION THERE COULD BE LITIGATION."

This process will take several months--and more public meetings to play out.

It's possible the city council would not take a vote on Main Street until April or May.
