Karen Scullin reporting One Salt Lake City Detective who believes he has been singled out in the finger pointing, is Sgt. Don Bell, a 30 year veteran with the department.

Today Bell came out blasting the mayor, and demanding a public apology.

Sgt. Don Bell clearly feels the mayor has been after him for a long time. First in regards to some old unsolved murder cases he worked on, and now for his brief stint in the Elizabeth Smart case.

Today though, Bell felt vindicated after learning the two former Salt Lake Tribune reporters, who sold information to the National Enquirer, did not name Bell as a source.

Bell says he was never worried though, because he had done nothing wrong. In fact, Bell says one of those reporters called him with some ironic information shortly after talk about police leaks started to surface.

Sgt. Don Bell/Salt Lake City Police Dept.: "WHAT I FIND AMAZING IS THAT THEY WERE THE ONES THAT TOLD ME THAT THEY HAD HEARD THE MAYOR HAD BEEN SAYING I WAS THE RESPONSIBLE PERSON FOR THE LEAKS TO THE NATIONAL ENQUIRER. "

Bell thinks the Mayor's vendetta has carried over to the Smart case, and he wants an apology.

"Mayor Rocky Anderson/Salt Lake City: I DIDN'T USE HIS NAME. IT REALLY IS DON BELL THAT HAS MADE HIMSELF THE CENTER OF ATTENTION HERE. AND I DON'T UNDERSTAND IF SOMEONE DOESN'T WANT PUBLIC ATTENTION, HE KEEPS GOING OUT PUBLICLY "

The mayor did admit today he informed Police Chief Rick Dinse of his doubts about Bells abilities shortly after Elizabeth was kidnapped. Bell was removed from the case. He also admitted he asked Don Bell be kept away from the Smart family the day Elizabeth returned.

Anderson said he did that on behalf of Ed Smart, who wasn't available today to confirm or deny that story.
