Commissioner Roger Goodell backs NFL commitment to diversity

02/03/2025 3:18pm
Commissioner Roger Goodell says he doesn't believe the NFL's policies to promote diversity are in conflict with the Trump administration's efforts to ban diversity, equity and inclusion programs in the federal government. The NFL has rules in place that require teams to interview diverse candidates for key coaching and front office positions as part of the Rooney Rule that has been in place for more than two decades.  Several NFL owners contributed to Donald Trump's campaign or conservative causes during the 2024 election cycle. But Goodell said owners support the NFL's diversity rules and says they don't violate any laws.

Roger Goodell says NFL could have an international Super Bowl if league expands outside the US

02/03/2025 2:48pm
Commissioner Roger Goodell said the NFL could hold a Super Bowl outside of the United States if the league expands to have an international team. The NFL has made a big effort to expand its footprint worldwide with games played in England, Germany, Mexico and Brazil in recent years with a game scheduled for 2025 in Spain. But as of now, the Super Bowls have been played in NFL stadiums and international sites haven't been considered. A Super Bowl outside of North America would present challenges in terms of time zones with the U.S.-based broadcasters.

Super Bowl might hinge on middle men as Chiefs, Eagles prep for opponent's fierce interior pass rush

02/03/2025 2:03pm
There's no better way to spoil a play in the NFL these days than with strong pressure through the middle. More teams put premier rushers inside for a matchup advantage and the most direct path to the passer. The evolution of the running quarterback has also forced defenses to alter rushing strategies and not simply be focused on edge pressure that can be negated with a slide and a scramble. The Super Bowl 59 matchup between Kansas City and Philadelphia will showcase not only some elite interior rushers, but an excellent group of guards and centers on the other side.

Borussia Dortmund has a new coach and hopes that a flurry of new signings will help turnaround an underwhelming season so far. Niko Kovač started work as coach on Sunday. Kovač takes over from unbeaten interim coach Mike Tullberg, who stepped up from the club's under-19s for three games after Nuri Sahin was fired. Dortmund is meanwhile working on transfers. The club says Swedish defender Daniel Svensson has joined on loan from FC Nordsjælland. Chelsea winger Carney Chukwuemeka, Lyon midfielder Rayan Cherki, and Ajax goalkeeper Diant Ramaj are all reported targets on the last day of the winter transfer window. Kovač will have little time to work with any new arrivals before a crunch Bundesliga clash with Stuttgart on Saturday.

A Super Bowl in New Orleans is a great excuse to make shrimp po'boy sandwiches

02/03/2025 6:50am
If you're throwing a watch party for the Super Bowl, you couldn't ask for a better backdrop and inspiration than host city New Orleans. It's known for enticing food, and one that's fun to make and enjoy is the po'boy sandwich. Experts say that what makes the po'boy different from other sandwiches is the bread. It's got a crisp, thin crust and an airy, malty interior. You use two big pieces of it. If you're not in New Orleans, you might have to use a baguette or Italian loaf instead of the traditional New Orleans French bread. A fully dressed po'boy means shredded lettuce, sliced tomato, sliced pickles and mayonnaise. But any combination is fine. Popular fillings include roast beef, fried oysters and fried shrimp.

Biathlon star Fourcade withdraws bid to head French Alps 2030 Olympic organizing committee

02/03/2025 5:25am
French biathlon star Martin Fourcade has withdrawn his candidacy to be president of the organising committee of the 2030 Winter Olympics. Fourcade said he ended his bid because of divergences with the promoters of the French project. In an email to the members of the future executive committee of the 2030 Games seen by The Associated Press, Fourcade said they have not been able to bridge differences on topics such as "the mode of governance, the vision, the territorial roots." Fourcade moved on to Olympic politics after a glorious biathlon career during which he won six Olympic gold medals. He was elected in 2022 to be an IOC member by fellow athletes and was part of the organizing committee of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

'I felt disrespected' Hermoso says after World Cup kiss from former Spain soccer boss

02/03/2025 5:12am
Spain forward Jenni Hermoso has testified at Luis Rubiales' trial in Madrid that she did not consent to being kissed by the country's former top soccer official after winning the 2023 Women's World Cup. Rubiales is accused of sexual assault and of trying to coerce Hermoso to publicly support him after the incident in Sydney. The 47-year-old has denied the charges but was forced to resign and banned by FIFA for three years. The trial in Madrid's High Court is expected to last at least 10 days. Court officials say Rubiales could face a fine or a prison sentence of one to four years if found guilty.

Man falls 20 feet after ski lift chair dislodges at New Hampshire resort

02/03/2025 4:26am
New Hampshire authorities say a man riding a ski lift fell about 20 feet to the ground after his chair detached. The state fire marshal's office says the man suffered non-life-threatening injuries Sunday and was taken to a hospital after the fall at the Attitash Mountain Resort in Bartlett. The marshal's office says it appears a mechanical failure caused one of the chairs to dislodge from the cable. No one else was hurt. The Flying Bear lift is closed as the investigation by the marshal's office and the Passenger Tramway Safety Board continues. A spokesperson for Colorado-based Vail Resorts, which owns Attitash, says the resort does daily lift inspections.

Chiefs and Eagles handle the Super Bowl opening night spectacle like they've been here, done that

02/03/2025 4:00am
Patrick Mahomes treated Super Bowl opening night like a two-minute drill, providing rapid-fire answers to one question after another. Travis Kelce passed on an inquiry about popping the question to Taylor Swift. Been here, done that. That's how the Kansas City Chiefs handled the annual extravaganza that kicks off Super Bowl week. The Philadelphia Eagles were here two years ago so they weren't fazed by the silliness either, though their most dynamic player is new to the wild experience that could overwhelm teams that aren't used to the circus atmosphere. Saquon Barkley got his first taste of this made-for-television spectacle. Nick Sirianni received letters, and a kiss from Chad Johnson. Jalen Hurts even cracked a smile or two.

Saquon Barkley can set the NFL total season rushing record. All he wants is a Super Bowl win

02/03/2025 4:00am
Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley is only 30 yards away from breaking the NFL record for rushing yards in a season, playoffs included. Terrell Davis set the record in 1998 for the Denver Broncos and led them to a Super Bowl title. The championship is what Barkley wants. Barkley had 2,005 yards rushing in the regular season while sitting out the finale. He has 442 yards in the playoffs, including three touchdown runs of 60 yards or more. Barkley turns 28 on Super Bowl Sunday and hopes to wrap up a dream first season with the Eagles.

02/03/2025 3:09am

They have serial winner Marco Odermatt. And the Swiss team has four more skiers who have won races this season. The Austrian team has no standout performer going into their home worlds.

Lindsey Vonn faces more criticism for competing at age 40 than Tom Brady, Lewis Hamilton

02/03/2025 2:48am
Lindsey Vonn has faced a lot of second guessing about her comeback to ski racing at the age of 40 this season. Marcel Hirscher didn't get nearly as many pointed questions when he returned to ski racing after five seasons away. Two-time Olympic champion Michaela Dorfmeister suggested that Vonn "should see a psychologist." Austrian downhill great Franz Klammer said "she's gone completely mad." Vonn responded at the world championships by saying that "there were a lot of questions that had to do with me as a person and my psychological state and what life is outside of skiing. And that was completely inappropriate and disrespectful and I didn't deserve it."
