07/30/2024 8:08pm

Organizers said the latest tests of the famed Paris waterway showed compliance with quality standards. Elevated levels of bacteria delayed the men's race from Tuesday. The decision to go ahead with the Seine swim for the triathlon competitions is a big win for the city and Olympics organizers. They undertook a more than billion-dollar plan to clean up the long-polluted Seine and have been steadfast in their insistence that swimming events could safely be held in the river.

Jalolov and a few other pros, particularly IBF lightweight champion Beatriz Ferreira of Brazil, have some coaches and opponents questioning their presence in Paris.

The International Friendship Association, a body set up to organize the event, says the World Friendship Games will move to unspecified dates in 2025 from the planned schedule in September 2024. It says the decision is subject to approval by the Russian government. The International Olympic Committee was strongly opposed to any rival event. It said in March the proposed Russian event was "a cynical attempt by the Russian Federation to politicize sport."

US lawmakers accuse Olympic leaders of blackmail over their fight with IOC, World Anti-Doping Agency
07/30/2024 10:16am
Instead of reexamining a drug-fighting law that Olympic leaders don't like, a bipartisan group in Congress is proposing a new bill that would hold back funding for the World Anti-Doping Agency if it doesn't do its job better. Republicans and Democrats joined in rolling out a bill that would make permanent the ability of the U.S. office of drug control to withhold the $3 million-plus payment the government is supposed to give to WADA. Last week, the IOC awarded Salt Lake City the 2034 Winter Olympics but only after extracting a promise that organizers would work to undercut a law designed to root out doping conspiracies. That law is being used to investigate WADA's handling of a case involving Chinese swimmers that has marred the start of the Paris Olympics.

Adams says at the Olympics organizers' daily news conference in Paris: "They are women in their passports and it's stated that this is the case, that they are female."

In the men's competition, Britain's Kieran Reilly was the top qualifier with a two-run average of 91.21 points. Marcus Christopher of the U.S. was second and defending Olympic champion Logan Martin of Australia third.

South Sudan's story continues at the Paris Games with a basketball rematch against the US
07/30/2024 9:01am
South Sudan coach Royal Ivey says his life feels like a movie right now. He might be onto something: An underdog, under-funded team from a nation still dealing with the aftereffects of a civil war and bracing for its first free election stuns the basketball establishment by qualifying for the Olympics, then nearly beats the best team in the world and goes on to win its opening contest at the Paris Games. That sure sounds like a movie script. And make no mistake: The U.S. Olympic men's basketball team loves the story. It just has no interest in providing a Hollywood ending when the teams play on Wednesday.

07/30/2024 8:28am
Gray-haired Olympians are usually found in sports like sailing, shooting, and equestrian. Not on the track. Irish sprinter Thomas Barr is an exception. The now 32-year-old Barr turned gray prematurely in his late teens and hardly pays much attention to his hair color these days. But others do. Competitors made references to his hair color when Barr ran the third leg of Ireland's winning 4x400-meter mixed relay at the European Championships in June. The mixed relay heats at the Paris Olympics start on Friday and medals will be awarded after Saturday's final.

What is that? Olympic Phryge confounds some, but is very French
07/30/2024 5:49am
To international visitors, the triangular Olympic Phryge mascot might resemble the iconic monument, a "poop emoji," a tongue or even, well, female anatomy. However, it rings a particular bell for the French. It's been over 200 years since the "bonnet phrygien" was last a common sight in the streets of Paris. Yet, the hat still carries the same revolutionary spirit it first did in 1789. The official Olympic Phryge mascot is a nod to the Phrygian cap, an emblematic accessory of the French revolutionaries. Revived from Roman times, when freed slaves used to wear it, the revolutionaries adopted it as a testimony to their values of freedom and emancipation.

Paris Olympics surfing heats postponed through Tuesday in Tahiti due to unfavorable conditions
07/30/2024 1:43am
The next heats of the Paris Olympics surfing competition were postponed through Tuesday afternoon in Tahiti, as strong winds and sheets of rain whipped through the surfing venue, contributing to unfavorable conditions. Surf forecasters estimate that waves will be large on Tuesday and Wednesday, but onshore winds could mean "disorganized and potentially out of control" conditions. Forecasts are the biggest determinant of when the Paris Olympics surfing competition will take place, predicting swells, as well as the angle and size of the waves. Only four days of a ten-day window will be allotted for the competition.
