Reign snap 5-game losing streak with 2-1 victory over the Wave

Veronica Latsko scored on a header in the 89th minute and the Seattle Reign snapped a five-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over the San Diego Wave in the National Women's Soccer League. The match at Seattle's Lumen Field started poorly for the Reign when Tziarra King was handed a red card in the ninth minute and Seattle was down a player the rest of the match. Sydney Leroux and Clair Emslie both scored in the first half and Angel City held on for a 2-1 victory on the road against the Utah Royals in the earlier match on Friday.

Bologna draws at Torino and misses chance to go third in Italy

Bologna has missed a chance to overtake Juventus and move into third place in Serie A. The visitor drew at Torino 0-0 on Friday and remains fourth in the standings. Neither side produced much creative spark on a lackluster evening in Turin. Torino remains in 10th place in the league.

Williams brothers star for Athletic Bilbao in win over Getafe

Brothers Iñaki and Nico Williams have combined twice to give Athletic Bilbao a 2-0 victory over Getafe in the Spanish league.  Iñaki scored twice on Friday. Athletic's victory was marred by two red cards and a late sending off for coach Ernesto Valverde. To compound Getafe's misery, forward Mason Greenwood missed a late penalty for the home side.

Luton gains valuable point from home draw with Everton

Luton has drawn with Everton 1-1 in its fight to avoid relegation from the English Premier League. Everton took the lead from the penalty spot. Elijan Adebayo equalized with his 10th goal of the season. The point put Luton behind 17th-placed Nottingham Forest only on goal difference. It remains third to last and in the drop zone with just two games remaining. Everton is safe in 15th place.

Leipzig draws at Hoffenheim in Bundesliga

Hoffenheim has scored in the last minute to draw with Leipzig 1-1 in the Bundesliga. Leipzig has already secured a place in next year's Champions League. It stays in fourth place, one point behind Stuttgart, which has a game in hand. Hoffenheim remains seventh on Friday and with a shot of a Europa Conference League playoff place. Benjamin Šeško got the opener for Leipzig before halftime when goalkeeper Oliver Baumann let Šeško's header squirm through his hands. After Leipzig's Xavi Simons was sent off for a second bookable offense in the 72nd minute, Andrej Kramarić equalized.

Savanier scores sweet volley then gets red card as Montpellier beats Toulouse

Veteran midfielder Teji Savanier has scored a goal-of-the-season contender and been sent off as Montpellier won at Toulouse 2-1 in the French league. The result on Friday lifts Montpellier above Toulouse on goal difference in the middle of Ligue 1. Savanier and Toulouse center back Rasmus Nicolaisen were both issued red cards. Lens scored two second-half goals to beat Lorient 2-0. Lorient is second to last with two games remaining and in serious relegation trouble.

Japan beats Uzbekistan in stoppage time in U23 Asian Cup final

Japan has left it late to win its second Under-23 Asian Cup after beating Uzbekistan 1-0 in the final. Substitute Fuki Yamada broke the deadlock in the first minute of stoppage time in Al-Rayyan on Friday. Japan goalkeeper Leo Kokubo saved a penalty to preserve the lead. Uzbekistan almost took an incredible lead just before halftime. Ruslanbek Jiyanov was just inside the Japanese half when he tried to send a long cross into the area but, instead, the flight of the ball deceived Kokubo and bounced off the crossbar. For the goal, Ryotaro Araki backheeled the ball to Yamada just outside the area, and he fired low into the left corner.

Euro 2024 teams can add 3 players in 26-man squads to help cope with injuries

Teams at the European Championship can name three extra players in 26-man squads after UEFA agrees to amend the tournament rules. Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman and England's Gareth Southgate were among those asking UEFA to let them select more players for tournament in June. The move should help them deal better with injuries in the squad. Tournament squad sizes had long been 23 players but were increased to 26 by UEFA for Euro 2020 and by FIFA for the 2022 World Cup. This was to better deal with COVID-19 issues in team delegations.

The message was clear from Italy coach Luciano Spalletti. Put your PlayStation away and start focusing more on scoring goals. The results have been wondrous for Gianluca Scamacca. He has scored nine goals in 11 matches for Atalanta since Spalletti dropped him from the Azzurri squad in March for his video game obsession. And now he's ready to fill Italy's gaping hole at center forward just in time for Euro 2024 in Germany. Italy is in a group with Spain, Croatia and Albania.

Marco Reus to leave Borussia Dortmund at end of season after 12 years

Marco Reus will leave Borussia Dortmund this summer after both sides announced that they've agreed to part ways. That will end the midfielder's 12-year run with the German team. The 34-year-old Reus' contract expires at the end of the season but unlike one year ago when they extended the deal, they'll now move on. The former captain says "The club and I have come to the decision not to extend my contract." Reus first joined Dortmund when he was 6 years old and spent nearly a decade in its youth system. He rejoined Dortmund from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2012.

Clattenburg leaves role as referee consultant at Forest because of 'friction' with rival clubs

Mark Clattenburg is leaving his role as a referee consultant at Nottingham Forest. He says his presence at the club has caused "unintended friction" with its Premier League rivals. Clattenburg also cited the "unmerited targeting of me, personally, by certain participants and pundits" as a reason behind his decision to leave the role. Clattenburg is a former Premier League referee. He has worked with Forest since February seemingly in a move to help the club understand referee decisions such as those made by the Video Assistant Referee. Forest has been publicly critical of a number of refereeing decisions in recent months

Switzerland's Euro 2024 prospects hit by injuries to Newcastle's Schär and Monaco's Zakaria

Switzerland's preparations for the European Championship have taken another hit with a key player's fitness being in doubt for a second straight day. Newcastle defender Fabian Schär followed Monaco midfielder Denis Zakaria in having their club coach suggest they're unlikely to play again this month because of hamstring injuries. Newcastle coach Eddie Howe says of Schär: "I doubt we'll see him again this season." Schär and Zakaria have both been expected Switzerland starters at Euro 2024. Switzerland coach Murat Yakin must finalize his squad by June 7. Switzerland is in a group with host Germany, Scotland and Hungary.

Courtois set to play 1st game of season for Real Madrid after recovering from injuries

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti says that goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is ready to play his first game of the season against Cadiz in the Spanish league on Saturday after recovering from a long injury layoff. The 31-year-old Belgian has not played since tearing the ACL in his left knee in August. He then ruptured the meniscus in his right knee in March when he was preparing to come back. Madrid could clinch the Spanish league title on Saturday when Barcelona also plays Girona. Ancelotti said that Andriy Lunin will be back in goal when Bayern Munich visits on Wednesday with their Champions League semifinal poised at 2-2.

The European club soccer season enters its final month with a series of tight title races for fans to savor. The Arsenal-Manchester City duel in England's Premier League will get the most attention but away from the "big five" leagues traditional city rivalries are playing out in Scotland, Turkey and Portugal. The best drama might be found in Belgium for a second straight year when the last round of games is played May 26. The Belgian league has another three-team title race aiming to match the epic climax of last season which saw a trophy-carrying helicopter change direction.

Foden and Shaw win Footballer of the Year awards as Man City makes it a double for individual prizes

Manchester City forward Phil Foden has been voted Footballer of the Year in England. Foden's award comes after an outstanding season with 16 Premier League goals so far for the defending champion. He has also provided 10 assists in all competitions for City. And City made it a double for individual prizes with Khadija "Bunny" Shaw taking the women's award. Foden received 42% of the votes to beat second-place Declan Rice from Arsenal and City teammate Rodri in third. Shaw is the second City player to win the women's award. Nikita Parris won in 2019.

Soccer fan arrested in Marseille as authorities investigate reports of Nazi salute, monkey chants

A soccer fan has been arrested by French police as local authorities investigate reports of a Nazi salute and monkey chants from Atalanta supporters at Marseille's stadium. Marseille and Atalanta drew 1-1 in the first leg of the Europa League semifinals on Thursday. One Atalanta fan was filmed in the stands of the Stade Velodrome mimicking a monkey. In another video posted on social media, another supporter was seen performing a Nazi salute. The Bouches-du-Rhone prefecture said Friday that one suspect was arrested with the case referred to the public prosecutor "to investigate the facts."

Klopp says he has 'no problem' with Salah after touchline spat

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp insists his spat with Mohamed Salah has been "completely resolved." Klopp says his long history with the star forward ensured there was no lasting damage to their relationship. Klopp and Salah were involved in a touchline confrontation during the 2-2 draw at West Ham on Saturday. Salah was asked after the game to comment on the incident and he was heard saying: "There's going to be a fire today if I speak." Klopp says the matter is a "non-story" and "there's no problem" between them.
