Elite pilots prepare for 'camping out in the sky' as they compete in prestigious ballooning race
10/04/2023 11:13pm
A radio, batteries and a trap door on the side for stretching are some of the things pilots are relying on to endure what's been called the world's oldest gas balloon race. It's been 15 years since elite ballooning pilots have gathered in the United States for the Gordon Bennett competition. They'll be launching for this year's race during an international balloon fiesta that draws hundreds of thousands of spectators to the heart of New Mexico each fall. The launch window opens Saturday. This year some worry that the massive balloons could be mistaken for Chinese spy balloons. But pilots are more concerned about charting a path out of bad weather and on to victory.

Adams had to be helped off the field and after being examined in a tent on the sideline was seen yelling at the on-field neurologist before being taken to the locker room. Adams was playing in his first game in more than a year after suffering a torn quadriceps tendon in the 2022 season opener.
Too much Taylor? Travis Kelce says NFL TV coverage is 'overdoing it' with Swift during games
10/04/2023 5:36pm
Travis Kelce agrees with the idea that NFL TV coverage is "overdoing it" with the amount of times Taylor Swift has been shown while attending his Kansas City Chiefs' games the last two weekends. Swift was in a suite Sunday night at MetLife Stadium for the Chiefs' victory over the New York Jets in prime time. Jason Kelce told his brother during their "New Heights" podcast that cameras showed live shots of the suite 17 times during the game. Ian Trombetta, the NFL's senior vice president of social, influencer and content marketing, said in an interview with The Associated Press that "there's always chatter around different celebrities and so on that are attending different games, but this took a life of its own."

McCaffrey trade paying big dividends for the 49ers a year later
10/04/2023 4:54pm
When the San Francisco 49ers dealt a bevy of draft picks to Carolina last October for Christian McCaffrey, some skeptics asked whether they overpaid for a running back in a passing league. Nearly 12 months later, coach Kyle Shanahan can't even imagine what life would be like without McCaffrey driving the Niners offense. The addition of McCaffrey immediately transformed the 49ers from a middling offense into one of the most productive. Now with an entire offseason to fully integrate McCaffrey into the system, the Niners offense has gone to an even higher level.

10/04/2023 4:47pm
Buffalo Bills pass rusher Von Miller has returned to practice for the first time in more than 10 months since sustaining a season-ending right knee injury. Miller says he experienced the familiar mix of nerves and anticipation before Wednesday's practice. What's uncertain is when the NFL's active leader in sacks will play in his first game. The 34-year-old and the Bills are taking a cautious approach with Buffalo preparing to play against Jacksonville in London on Sunday. Miller says he'd be open to playing, and would also be fine if team doctors elected for him to wait another week or two.

Orioles to play at 1 p.m. Saturday, well before Billy Joel and Stevie Nicks play concert next door
10/04/2023 4:33pm
The Orioles may be Big Shots this year, but they'll try to stay out of the Piano Man's way this weekend. Baltimore announced that Game 1 of the AL Division Series at Camden Yards is scheduled for just after 1 p.m. Saturday. Then it will be time for the Orioles and Texas Rangers to Stand Back, because Stevie Nicks and Billy Joel are playing a concert at 7 p.m. that night at M&T Bank Stadium next door. The two big events in close proximity could create all sorts of parking issues. But assuming there's no rain, there should be a big enough gap for baseball fans to begin Movin' Out before the concertgoers start arriving in earnest.

Jrue Holiday lands in Boston, bringing 'electricity' to practice and championship goals
10/04/2023 4:23pm
The Boston Celtics are hoping that Jrue Holiday's defensive prowess and all-around intensity can help propel them to another NBA championship. Boston reached the conference finals last year but made some big moves this offseason. They traded Marcus Smart for Kristaps Porzingis. Smart was considered the team's heart. Holiday may be just the player to replace that. The deal cost the Celtics Robert Williams III and Malcolm Brogdon and two first-round draft picks, but it made them the co-favorite to win the NBA title, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
Unbeaten Maryland takes another shot at the Big Ten's elite this weekend at No. 4 Ohio State
10/04/2023 4:11pm
Unbeaten Maryland is off to its best start since 2001 and very nearly cracked the Top 25 this week. The Terrapins look like a solid Big Ten team in coach Michael Locksley's fifth year at the helm. What they haven't done is produce a really head-turning victory. Saturday's matchup at No. 4 Ohio State certainly represents a chance to do that. Maryland and Michigan are the only two teams in the country that are 5-0 with every victory by at least 18 points.

Defending champion Manchester City won 3-1 at Leipzig and Barcelona won 1-0 at Porto.
Jets' Breece Hall returns to Denver without a 'pitch count' nearly a year after his knee injury
10/04/2023 4:04pm
Breece Hall hasn't watched the video of the worst moment of his young NFL career in a while. The New York Jets running back doesn't need to anymore. He's focused on creating big plays these days, not dwelling on that game in Denver nearly a year ago that cut short his promising rookie season. Hall tore the ACL and injured the meniscus in his left knee in the second quarter of the Jets' 16-9 victory over the Broncos in Week 7. He's returning to Denver for the first time since the injury. The Jets say Hall no longer has any restrictions on his playing time.
Steelers RB Najee Harris puts the onus on the players, not the coaches, after 'soft' performance
10/04/2023 4:00pm
Steelers running back Najee Harris is tired of people piling on the Pittsburgh coaching staff during his team's sluggish start. Harris says it's up to the players to do a better job of executing the game plan with the Steelers at 2-2 heading into October. Pittsburgh's offense has struggled to find a rhythm early and heads into a visit by Baltimore near the bottom of the league in nearly every major offensive category. Harris says the Steelers need to play with an edge in an effort to get some of their swagger back.

Veteran Spain forward Pedro scored in the fifth minute of stoppage time to earn Lazio a 2-1 win at Celtic in the Champions League. Matias Vecino equalized at a 29th-minute corner.
Fantasy plays: Players to start and sit for NFL Week 5
10/04/2023 3:33pm
The 49ers' Brock Purdy is one of the safest quarterbacks in fantasy. Fantasy-wise, he's finished 10th, 23rd, 13th, and 11th among quarterbacks through four weeks. A tough matchup with Dallas limits his ceiling in Week 5, but if you're looking for a guaranteed 15 points, Purdy's your guy. Miami's Raheem Mostert disappointed following his 41.7-point outburst, but what did you expect? He was never going to be the only fantasy-relevant back in Miami, though it is a little concerning that Devon Achane played 65.5% of snaps to Mostert's 41.4% last week. Even a handful of chances in Miami's offense is good enough for FLEX consideration against a Giants defense allowing the 10th-most fantasy points to running backs.

The Tampa Bay Rays ended the second-longest postseason scoreless streak at 33 innings when Curtis Mead lined a seventh-inning, two-out RBI single off Texas Rangers starter Nathan Eovaldi in Game 2 of the AL Wild Card Series. Tampa Bay fell one inning shy of the record set by the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1966-74. Tampa Bay had not scored since Jose Siri's solo homer in the sixth inning of last year's AL Wild Card Series opener against Cleveland. The Rays had been shut out in consecutive playoff games, including Tuesday's 4-0 loss to Texas and last year's 1-0, 15-inning loss to Cleveland.

LSU coach Brian Kelly and his staff became concerned about bouts with dizziness Brooks was experiencing and sent him for additional testing.

In the 88th minute, Bukari beat goalkeeper Anthony Racioppi at his near post with a rising shot. Bukari had created the opening goal with a fast break in the 35th before his cross shot was touched in by forward Cherif Ndiaye. Young Boys got goals from Filip Ugrinic and Cedric Itten.

10/04/2023 3:01pm
AC Milan again failed to spark its Champions League campaign into life as it was held 0-0 at Borussia Dortmund for its second straight goalless draw in the competition. Both teams had plenty of chances but were unable to finish them off in an entertaining match. Milan also drew 0-0 at home to Newcastle in their Champions League opener. And it could be left counting the cost of its profligacy in both matches. Newcastle surprisingly beat Paris Saint-Germain 4-1 to move top of Group F. It is a point above PSG and two above Milan. Dortmund is a point further back.

After a long rehabilitation process, Holmgren is back and 13 pounds heavier. He'll get his first major test when the Thunder open the preseason at home against the San Antonio Spurs.

Utilityman Jace Peterson replaced him on the roster. McCarthy won't be eligible to play again for the Diamondbacks until at least the NL Championship Series.
The Vikings found a way for veteran safety Harrison Smith to be disruptive again
10/04/2023 2:40pm
Harrison Smith had a quiet start to the season. Minnesota's defense made even less of an impact. The 12th-year veteran safety wasn't about to allow those trends continue or let the Vikings stay winless. Smith delivered a vintage all-over-the-field performance at Carolina. He finally fulfilled the goal of new defensive coordinator Brian Flores to make him one of the most disruptive players on the field as the Vikings won 21-13. Smith blitzed nine times and had career highs with 14 tackles and three sacks. He forced a fumble that the Vikings returned for a game-changing touchdown.

10/04/2023 2:27pm
opponents. And while the defense has done its job by holding both Ohio State and Duke to 17 or fewer points, the poor offensive production has been problematic. Notre Dame was scoring 46.0 points and generating 508.8 yards of offense through its first four games. This week against another unbeaten, No. 25 Louisville, the Irish will need to put more points on the board against coach Jeff Brohm's creative offense.
San Diego GM A.J. Preller says Bob Melvin will be back as manager of the underwhelming Padres

The GM says he and Melvin are excited about the challenge of trying to get back to the playoffs. The announcement came three days after the star-laden Padres finished 82-80. They were eliminated from playoff contention on Friday night, a bitter result for a team that reached the NL Championship Series last fall.
Pro Picks: Handing the Bears their 15th straight loss won't come easy for the Commanders
10/04/2023 2:14pm
Pushing the NFC champions to overtime is only a positive step if the Washington Commanders beat a team that's lost 14 straight. Sam Howell and the Commanders bounced back from a beating against the Bills to take the Eagles to the limit. Now they've got a chance to snap a two-game losing streak when the lowly Bears visit on Thursday night. Justin Fields had a career day, but still couldn't get Chicago its first win. The Bears have the league's fourth-worst pass defense so Howell could have another big day. Of course, he's got to stay upright. Howell is on pace to be sacked more times than any quarterback in NFL history.
Another inconsistent defense threatens to ground No. 9 USC's loftiest ambitions
10/04/2023 2:13pm
Southern California scored a combined 90 points in back-to-back road victories over the past two weeks to remain unbeaten in Lincoln Riley's second season in charge. The No. 9 Trojans also fell four spots in the AP Top 25 during those two weeks. That's because the college football world knows USC's defense has been leaky and inconsistent for a second season under Riley and his longtime defensive coordinator, Alex Grinch. Despite another year of talent additions, the Trojans are still struggling to stop anybody for an entire game. It's draining the momentum from any national title aspirations at USC.

That group averages from 170 to 231 yards per game by rushing for at least 35% of their yardage, with No. 22 Tennessee handing the ball off to an assortment of runners that have generated nearly 50% of its 2,331 yards. Kentucky's Ray Davis is coming off the nation's best rushing effort with a career-high 280 yards and three of his four touchdowns coming on the ground in a 33-14 rout of Florida.

10/04/2023 1:05pm
Antwerp defender Toby Alderweireld has missed a penalty with the last kick as the Belgian champion squandered a two-goal lead to lose its first Champions League home game 3-2 to Shakhtar Donetsk. Alderweireld was given a great chance to equalize when Taras Stepanenko was penalized for handball in the penalty area in the sixth minute of injury time. But Alderweireld swept his spot kick to the left of the post and wide, leaving Shakhtar to celebrate a morale-boosting win. Danylo Sikan scored twice to help the Ukrainian team claim its first Group H win after recovering from a poor first half. Alderweireld had scored Antwerp's last-minute goal to clinch the Belgian league title last season.
Mavs and Timberwolves play in Abu Dhabi as Gulf region's influence with the NBA grows
10/04/2023 12:54pm
The NBA returns to Abu Dhabi this week. The Dallas Mavericks and Minnesota Timberwolves play Thursday in the first of two preseason games in the United Arab Emirates capital. But most of the action is taking place off the court. Qatar's sovereign wealth fund is buying a minority stake of the Washington Wizards after the league's Board of Governors opened the door to such institutional investors. LeBron James recently visited Saudi Arabia on a trip that came a couple of months after he joked on social media that he'd accept the kind of astronomical figures that the Saudis are paying to lure soccer stars.

Its win over Feyenoord broke a run of six straight games in the competition without a victory.

Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes: 'I just haven't played very good' amid 3-1 start to season
10/04/2023 12:15pm
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes criticized his own performance four games into the season Wednesday. The two-time and reigning league MVP says he must play better if Kansas City wants to defend its Super Bowl title. Mahomes threw for just 203 yards with a touchdown pass and two interceptions last Sunday night in New York, though he made a couple of big plays with his legs to preserve a win over the Jets. Even with Mahomes playing poorly by his standards, the Chiefs have won three straight after their season-opening loss to Detroit and lead the AFC West. They play at Minnesota on Sunday.

Major League Baseball, after consulting the Elias Sports Bureau, says the score reverted to 1-0 under the Official Baseball Rules.

10/04/2023 11:18am

Berry said Watson's shoulder is structurally sound and the injury is not long term. Watson is expected to play on Oct. 15 against San Francisco. During his bye week news conference Wednesday, Berry also tried to clarify what led to the decision for Watson to be inactive, saying it was a consensus between the QB and team.

Florida State adds women's lacrosse after a report showed school was not Title IX compliant
10/04/2023 10:36am
Florida State is adding women's lacrosse as a varsity sport. The move comes 17 months after a report showed the Seminoles weren't in compliance with federal Title IX laws. Adding lacrosse will make FSU more equitable with regard to its men's and women's athletic scholarships. Athletic director Michael Alford says lacrosse will debut in spring 2026. He will begin searching for a coach in the coming weeks. USA Today reported last year that FSU double- and triple-counted female scholarship athletes in track and field sports to apparently improve gender-equity numbers. The accounting method erased half of the school's overall gender participation gap that year.
Man United in crisis: The factors that have led to Ten Hag's bad start to the season
10/04/2023 10:29am
Manchester United fans waited patiently outside Old Trafford late into the evening after the dispiriting 3-2 loss against Galatasaray. Even in an ever-worsening season they wanted to see manager Erik ten Hag and hoped for an autograph or selfie with the Dutch coach. His team may have been greeted with boos as the final whistle of a sixth in 10 games this season but there was no sign of blame being directed towards him from these fans. Ten Hag clearly still has credit in the bank after his first year at United when he led the club back into the Champions League and to a first trophy in six years. But his season increasingly looks like it has hit crisis point.

Visiting France's capital before Paralympic tickets go on sale next week, Stutzman dropped by a Paris school and wowed its young pupils with his shooting skills. His message about changing perceptions will hit a far larger audience when 4,400 athletes flock to Paris from Aug. 28-Sept. 8, 2024.

The other two players who helped produce goals, Vinícius Júnior and Federico Valverde, are also part of a youth movement at the 14-time European Cup winners. Bellingham is surprising even Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti with his ability to dominate games. He has found the net eight times in nine games since coming to Spain from Borussia Dortmund this summer.

10/04/2023 4:36am
FIFA has approved the possible reintegration of Russian youth teams into its competitions and eased a total ban on the country in international soccer amid the war in Ukraine. The decision by the FIFA Council followed eight days after European soccer body UEFA provoked a rare split among its own executive committee and member federations by welcoming back Russian national teams for boys and girls into its competitions. FIFA's decision means Russian teams can play in its Under-17 World Cups, but only if they advance through UEFA-run qualifying formats. FIFA says any Russian youth team in its competitions would play under the name "Football Union of Russia" rather than "Russia."

US appeals court hears arguments over 2010 hush-money settlement of Ronaldo rape case in Vegas
10/04/2023 3:59am
Lawyers for international soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo were back in court in a legal battle over hush money he paid in 2010 to a woman who accused him of raping her in Las Vegas. A three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals made no immediate decision after oral arguments Wednesday on the woman's bid to overturn last year's dismissal of the case. The woman's lawyers say Ronaldo owes her millions of dollars more than the $370,000 he paid earlier because someone in his camp was responsible for violating the confidentiality agreement. Ronaldo's lawyers maintain the sex was consensual, the agreement stands and the terms should remain secret.

Tommaso Allan moves back to flyhalf from fullback, Paolo Garbisi is back at inside center from flyhalf and Ange Capuozzo returns to fullback from the wing. Italy must win to stand a chance of reaching the quarterfinals.

Iran says it has agreed with Saudis to reschedule Asian Champions League soccer match after walkout
10/04/2023 3:05am
Iran says it has agreed with Saudi Arabia to reschedule an Asian Champions League match after the Saudi team walked out at the last minute. Monday's walkout was reportedly motivated by the presence of a statue of a slain Iranian general on the sideline. Gen. Qassem Soleimani, who was killed in a U.S. drone strike in 2020, is celebrated as a war hero by many in Iran but was seen as a terrorist by Western nations and Iran's opponents in the Middle East. The walkout appeared to further strain a recent rapprochement between Saudi Arabia and Iran. But both sides now appear eager to move past it. Iran's foreign minister said Wednesday that sport "should not be used as political leverage" by any side.

It's trailed by South Korea and Japan, each of which have fewer than half the overall number of medals.
