(KSL News) A funeral was held this morning for Samuel Ives. The 11-year-old boy died after a bear attack in American Fork Canyon.

The private service for family and friends was held in Pleasant Grove.

Sam Ives was killed Sunday when he was dragged from his family's tent by a black bear. Earlier this week his grandfather told KSL about the boy's gentle nature. Eldon Ives said, "He loved adventure, he loved to camp with his family. He was gregarious and outgoing. He had a lot of friends."

Yesterday, the family released this statement:

"We are sincerely grateful to the many people who have given generously to the family, including love, support, service, gifts, and flowers.

Our family cannot thank you all by name publicly, but we want everyone to know how much this means to our family. Your kindness has helped us in many ways."
