SALT LAKE CITY — A big part of our monthly budget goes toward food – and lately, it’s been especially tough for older adults. In today’s P50+, we’re examining a program designed specifically for seniors to purchase fresh produce at farmers markets and senior centers. We’re right in the middle of farmers market season! And thanks to the Seniors Farmers Market Nutrition program, older adults can enjoy free, fresh, locally grown fruits and veggies. If you qualify, you can get up to $50 worth of produce each season to spend at farmers markets or senior centers across the state. Like here at the Tooele Senior Citizens Center. Every week, health educator Megan Raschke brings in goods from two local farmers. “This year it’s Desert Castle Bees for the honey and Tagge’s famous fruit for the fruits and vegetables,” Raschke said. She says for many, it’s more than just fresh food. “Some of these seniors might not have the ability to go out and buy some of these things," Raschke said. "Having this program, they get it for free.” Sharon Brewer is one of the thousands of Utahns using the vouchers. This week, she’s hunting for something she’s been craving. “Today, I want a cantaloupe," Brewer said. "I’ve been kind of wanting one and some tomatoes.” Brewer said it’s not just the food, but the peace of mind. “It’s quite wonderful because a lot of us can’t really afford it,” Brewer said. “So, we’re able to get this and we have that nourishment at home.:” This is the third year, Raschke’s team has offered the program in Tooele. “Even the week leading up to it," Raschke said. "We have seniors asking, 'Are we doing it again this year? Do we get to sign up?'” The benefits go beyond nutrition; it’s about connection. “Knowing you’re gonna come down here and meet with people, drink coffee, just visit back and forth and find out everybody’s life," Brewer said. "Then share a meal. It just really makes you feel good.” If you’re 60 or older, live in Utah and meet certain income guidelines, you can sign up for the program.
