THE DESERT — Being outside in the Southwest could make anyone jealous of air conditioning, or at least that could be the reason for this tenacious guest who keeps trying to enter the visitor center at a New Mexico national monument.
El Malpais National Monument officials say they came across a greater roadrunner trying to enter the park's visitor center. The eager bird is seen on video wagging its tail as it tries to enter the building. When that doesn't work, it tries the building's side windows.
This apparently has happened multiple times this year, sometimes carrying a lizard in his mouth. Officials say it's likely that he's trying to woo the ladies, possibly with his ability to catch prey.
Of course, it's possible he was looking at his reflection or that he just wanted to peruse the visitor center. We also don't know if he's being chased by a highly intelligent but hapless coyote, either.
Whatever the case might be, maybe one day he'll figure out how to get in.
