FRUIT HEIGHTS — Davis County officials are warning drivers to be extra cautious after a rise in car burglaries. Investigators said thieves are targeting unlocked vehicles — and in some cases taking off with dangerous items.
The Davis County Sheriff's Office said Fruit Heights was hit especially hard overnight, with at least 14 reported burglaries near Nicholls Road and Mountain Road. Deputies believe there may be more victims who haven't yet come forward.
"Vehicle burglaries are not a new trend," said Stephanie Dinsmore, public information officer for the Davis County Sheriff's Office. "We're seeing more and more homeowners who are not taking the steps needed to secure their property."
Dinsmore said all 14 vehicles were left unlocked. None involved a "smash-and-grab."
The suspects didn't leave empty-handed. Deputies said stolen items included cash, e-bikes, and at least five firearms.
"Firearms do not belong in your car left unattended overnight," Dinsmore said.
Investigators are reviewing surveillance video that showed a group of young adults or teenagers driving a silver SUV. As of Friday afternoon, no arrests had been made.
Deputies are asking neighbors to take precautions and look out for each other. "Please be proactive in ensuring that you're minimizing crime in your area," Dinsmore said.
What you can do
- Lock vehicles at all times, even in driveways and garages.
- Remove valuables or keep them out of sight.
- Close garage doors at night.
