THE LAKE – Imagine that you're at the lake having a picnic with your family when you see a car suddenly drive right into the water. You jump out of your chair and sprint forward, ready to rescue the car's occupants.
But when you get a closer look, the driver has a serene look on his face. Or maybe it's an arrogant smirk. What exactly is going on?
Suddenly, the vehicle starts motoring across the water like a boat. Is this some sort of James Bond invention? Nope. It's something called a WaterCar Panther. I'd come across a few amphibious vehicles before, but they always looked pretty wonky. The WaterCar Panther has a much more normal appearance.
Check out this video and see for yourself.
The WaterCar Panther in this video doesn't seem to be moving very fast in the water. But I've since learned that they can reach speeds of up to 45 miles per hour on a smooth lake. That's pretty impressive. For what it's worth, their max speed on land is 85 miles per hour. While that might sound plenty fast to some, it would lead to a lot of horn honking from faster drivers on any typical day on I-15.
